Ammonium Removal Project in Cabildo, Chile

2023-2024

In collaboration with our partner in Chile, Simtech Ltda., at BIOBOX we have implemented a specialized system for ammonium removal from wastewater in the Valparaíso region. This project enhances the quality of treated water, meeting environmental standards and contributing to the sustainability of water resources in the area.

Project Description:

In the town of Cabildo, located in the Valparaíso region, a BIOBOX® Ammonium system has been installed in a wastewater treatment plant (PTAS). This system was specifically designed to reduce ammonium concentration in the effluent through an autotrophic biological process. In this process, nitrifying bacteria oxidize ammonium, converting it into nitrate—a method that allows continuous treatment with low operational cost and minimal environmental impact.

To maximize its efficiency, the system was developed in a containerized format, making both installation and startup easier. Additionally, it includes an advanced automation system, allowing remote monitoring of critical parameters such as pH and ammonium concentration, thus optimizing its operation and reducing the need for manual intervention.

The system has successfully reduced ammonium concentration by 90%, achieving levels that comply with environmental regulations and support the sustainability of water resources. These results improve the environmental performance of the water treatment plant and contribute to more sustainable wastewater management in the region.
