Moving forward together towards a cleaner Mediterranean thanks to the SEACURE Project

We are proud to be part of the European SEACURE Project, funded by Horizon Europe, which aims to reduce nutrient pollution in the soil–river–sea system of the Mediterranean caused by agricultural activity and inadequate wastewater treatment.

This ambitious project is being developed across six regions in Spain, Italy, and Greece, and at BIOBOX Water, we are leading the Mar Menor pilot (Murcia) —one of the most sensitive and emblematic areas of the Mediterranean ecosystem.

2nd General Assembly

After the 1st General Assembly in Brussels, the 25 partners from 5 countries gathered in Turin for the 2nd General Assembly to share the progress achieved by all members —including technology centers, universities, and private companies— and to strengthen the collaborative ties that make this project possible.

The role of BIOBOX and Ingeobras

During the meeting, we presented the design of the Mar Menor pilot plant, developed using BIOBOX’s biological denitrification technology, capable of reducing nitrates in agricultural runoff before they reach the sea.

Representing BIOBOX, our biotechnologist and PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Dr. Carmen Menacho, presented the project’s progress, which is fully funded by the European Union under SEACURE. The work includes the design, installation, commissioning, and performance assessment of the pilot plant.

You can find more details about this initiative in our Mar Menor success story.

Our contribution marks a decisive step toward restoring the Mar Menor ecosystem.

A shared challenge

Nutrient pollution from agricultural activities and insufficient wastewater treatment is severely impacting water quality, soil health, and biodiversity across the Mediterranean basin.

Excess nutrients contribute to soil degradation, eutrophication, algal blooms, and ecological imbalance around the world.
To address this challenge effectively, a comprehensive approach that connects landscapes, rivers, and seas is essential.

How SEACURE addresses this challenge

Led by the BETA Technological Center (UVic-UCC), SEACURE aims to demonstrate and scale up innovative nutrient management solutions by combining:

  • Sustainable land-use practices
  • Improved wastewater treatment
  • Nature-based restoration actions

With pilot sites in Spain (Mar Menor and Central Catalonia), Italy (Po Delta and Esino River), and Greece (Axios Delta), the project also works on governance mechanisms to help replicate the most effective solutions in other European river basins.

Innovation with a human factor

Beyond the technical progress, the meeting in Turin reminded us of something fundamental: innovation is not only built through technology, but also through trust, cooperation, and human connection.

That is why, we thank our partners for sharing their field experiences with farmers, livestock producers, and local landowners, because without them, innovation could not be implemented.

This project proves how science, business, and local communities can move forward together toward a more sustainable future.
