Biological Denitrification Project in Torrent (Valencia, Spain)

2022-2023

At BIOBOX, we are proud to have implemented the first biological denitrification plant in the Valencian Community, located in the Cumbres de Calicanto and Montelevante residential areas in Torrent (Valencia). This innovative project ensures a high-quality drinking water supply for over 700 homes, providing a sustainable and efficient solution.

Heterotrophic Biological Denitrification WTP in Torrent

The Torrent City Council awarded the project “Design and Implementation of a WTP for Nitrate Removal through Biological Treatment at the Horteta Reservoir,” aimed at ensuring a high-quality drinking water supply for over 700 families in the area.

BIOBOX® was responsible for the comprehensive management of the project, leading the design, installation, and commissioning of a biological denitrification water treatment plant utilizing the patented BIOBOX Nitrates technology. This technology replicates the natural nitrate removal process in an intensified and automated way, permanently eliminating this contaminant from drinking water.

The plant, with a treatment capacity of 120 m³/h, was designed to adapt to the fluctuating water demand of the Calicanto and Montelevante residential areas, offering flexibility and efficiency to meet the needs of this community.

The denitrification process is carried out through a biofilter that converts nitrate (NO3) into nitrogen gas (N2), using a natural and environmentally friendly method. The water treatment plant not only complies with health regulations but has also been designed with a focus on sustainability. With performance that maximizes the use of 98-99% of the captured water, it minimizes waste and reduces energy consumption, making it a viable solution from both an economic and environmental perspective.

Since its commissioning in February 2024, the plant has been supplying drinking water to the population. This project has enabled the residents of Cumbres de Calicanto and Montelevante to access high-quality drinking water, putting an end to years of problems related to nitrate contamination.

This project is part of the Torrent City Council’s plan for the Promotion of Urban and Sustainable Civic Infrastructure (FICUS).
