Find out about BIOBOX® Ammonium. A proprietary technology capable of biologically removing ammonium from drinking water and wastewater.
Description of equipment:
BIOBOX® is the new firm of compact Plug&Play plants, 100% automated for the treatment of drinking water, urban or industrial wastewater and reuse. With a B2B approach, the solutions offered are focused on treating small and medium-sized flows with unique problems and causes.
The BIOBOX® project was born as a result of an intense R&D&I effort and based on the experience and lessons learned by two leading companies in the sector, Ingeobras and Filtralite (Saint-Gobain). Both companies decided to combine their knowledge in engineering and research to propose a disruptive approach to the classic container solution.

BIOBOX® technology has been implemented to address 9 types of contaminants present in drinking water, urban wastewater and industrial water.

BIOBOX Ammonium technology:
BIOBOX® Ammonium can be used to biologically remove ammonium from both: drinking water and wastewater.
BIOBOX Ammonium for drinking water treatment:
This disruptive proposal improves the classical approach to ammonia nitrogen removal in drinking water treatment by break point chlorination.
One of the main problems with break point chlorination is that the ammonium demand versus chlorine demand is in the order of about 1 to 10. In addition, it generates toxic by-products that need to be treated afterwards, such as trihalomethanes; haloacetic acids; haloacetonitriles and toxic vapours and gases.
However, BIOBOX® Ammonium treats contaminated water through the natural action of bacteria (bacteria that are harmless to health, group 1).
Thanks to this treatment, pollutants are fully removed and the polluted water is transformed into clean water. No toxic by-products are generated and the operating and investment costs are much lower.

The same process as in nature, intensified and automated.

Types of plants offered:
BIOBOX® offers solutions adapted to different types of projects:
- For projects that need to create a completely new plant: 100% automated Plug&Play systems are offered that integrate a final filtration, refining and disinfection in the same container:

- For projects that need to be adapted to already existing installations: 100% automated Plug&Play systems are offered that take advantage of existing plant filtration and chlorination.

Advantages of Drinking Water Technology
- Variable concentrations of the pollutant can be treated in a container.
- No chemical dosing.
- No generation of pollutant by-products.
- Lower operating and investment costs (↓OPEX and ↓ CAPEX).
- Proven and safe technology: Successful case stories (Canal de Isabel II / Putatan II DWTP).
- Quick construction.
- Remote control 4.0.
- 100% automated Plug&Play plants.
- Less space required.
- Sustainable proprietary technology.
- Designed by water treatment experts with more than 25 years of experience.
BIOBOX Ammonium for wastewater treatment:
This technology is also suitable for wastewater treatment.
The concept of biological nitrification is widely known in wastewater, however, with BIOBOX® we propose an improved approach to the classical traditional solutions, with yields of over 90%.
In this case, the treatment used involves nitrification followed by denitrification:

As in drinking water treatment, it is possible to design a plant for the complete treatment or to adapt the plant to existing installations. It would work at the end of the process.
Advantages of wastewater technology
- 50% less space requirement compared to conventional treatments (activated sludge, MBR).
- Capable of treating high concentrations of ammonium.
- NH4+ removal performance above 90%.
- Lower operating and investment costs (↓OPEX and ↓ CAPEX).
- Proven and safe technology: Success Stories (Mining in the Zamora-Chinchipe region, Ecuador).
- Quick construction.
- Remote control 4.0.
- 100% automated Plug&Play plants.
- Less space required.
- Sustainable technology.
- Designed by water treatment experts with more than 25 years of experience.
