The technical magazine INDUAMBIENTE has published an article dedicated to the advantages that the innovative BIOBOX technology brings to the Chilean market.
BIOBOX technology has been introduced in Chile to eliminate four types of pollutants present in drinking water, urban and industrial wastewater: nitrates, ammonium, phosphorus and sulphates.

The advantages of BIOBOX
This modular bioremediation solution removes nitrates, ammonium, phosphorus and sulphates from water.
Remember the name: “BIOBOX”. This is the name of the new technological solution for the water treatment sector that Simtech has added to its portfolio of products and services. BIOBOX is a development of INGEOBRAS, a company that Simtech represents in Chile. BIOBOX arose from an R&D&I initiative, based on the experience and lessons learned by the Spanish company over more than 20 years of experience in the field.
Gustavo Salas, commercial manager of SIMTECH, highlights that BIOBOX is able to combine knowledge in water treatment, engineering and digitalisation to configure a system with a disruptive approach compared to the classic containerised solution.
“”The objective is to create fully automated compact water treatment plants capable of solving the limitations of traditional alternatives, such as high process costs and concentrated pollutant residues that are difficult to manage”
Gustavo Salas, Sales Manager Simtech
BIOBOX technology has been introduced in Chile to treat four types of pollutants present in drinking water, urban and industrial wastewater: nitrates, ammonium, phosphorus and sulphates.
Modular compact water treatment plants in Chile: BIOBOX Chile
The BIOBOX design is based on technical applicability, cost-effectiveness and sustainability of the plant as key factors.
“BIOBOX systems are modular and it is possible to scale the solution to treat different flow rates and pollutant concentrations. They can also work in combination with existing infrastructures, optimising them, boosting their capacity or acting as tertiary treatment”
Joaquín Murría, CEO of INGEOBRAS- BIOBOX
He adds that for water treatment with combined pollutant matrices, it is possible to build ad-hoc plants capable of integrating different BIOBOX solutions in a single container, or in two containers, operating in series with these technologies separately. For medium and large flows, modular solutions are designed that operate in parallel from the same power supply.
The executive says that thanks to intense innovation and development work, they have managed to make very advanced technology available to all types of companies, which was previously only available to large plants and investors. He also states that:
“BIOBOX’s approach is to optimise designs to reduce the space required, the associated investment costs and the cost per cubic metre treated. Specifically, with this type of technology we reduce energy consumption, the use of reagents and minimise waste generation, creating clean and environmentally safe processes”
Joaquín Murría, CEO of INGEOBRAS- BIOBOX
Murría also reveals that from the beginning they detected the need, especially for industrial water management and in small and medium-sized municipalities, to develop containerised solutions due to the need to reduce the execution time of the works as much as possible, minimising space and investment costs.
“Our experience in the design of civil engineering plants and the impressive results already achieved with our compact plants were the starting point for this line of business”
Joaquín Murría, CEO of INGEOBRAS- BIOBOX
Customised and 100% automated compact water treatment plants: BIOBOX Chile
Simtech emphasises that, apart from being a fast construction solution, BIOBOX can be adapted to hard to reach places and extreme climatic conditions. In addition, it operates in a fully automated way, with on-line remote management and self-management capacity.
Gustavo Salas describes these and other advantages:
“The plant is monitored by sensor technology to ensure maximum resource operation, avoid potential problems and facilitate management with minimal intervention by operating personnel. This continuous measurement of key parameters in all variants of water treatment processes provides an indicative view of how the plant is performing at all times. For example, sensorisation allows input usage to be adjusted to what is strictly necessary, with the flexibility to absorb changes and fluctuations.”
Gustavo Salas, Sales Manager Simtech
Likewise, all the operating data and parameters monitored in the process are recorded both locally, in memory format, and virtually on a server, allowing them to be viewed in real time and in history from any device with an internet connection. This review can be accessed simultaneously by several users from anywhere in the world.
According to Joaquín Murría, automation allows complete control of the installation.
“It is a very convenient solution for the end user. It is complemented by a notification and alarm service via messaging alerts directly to the mobile device, which considerably reduces the reaction time of the operational staff in any situation”
Joaquín Murría, CEO of INGEOBRAS- BIOBOX
In conclusion, this interesting technological proposal from BIOBOX opens a window of opportunity for end users or service providers in search of alternative ‘plug & play’ treatment solutions to solve a wide range of problems, with low CAPEX (capital expenditure) and OPEX (operating expenditure).
