On October 27, 2023, we participated as guest speakers at the LIFE SPOT project conference. This event brings together experts in drinking water treatment and leading companies in the sector to explore the latest technologies in biological denitrification, including our own patented and certified technology called Puremust-SN, integrated within BIOBOX Nitrates.
What is the LIFE SPOT project?
LIFE SPOT is a European project that addresses the problem related to water quality in rural areas of Mediterranean countries such as Spain and France. Its main mission is to develop a new technology, based on microalgae and cork, capable of removing nitrates and micropollutants from contaminated groundwater to produce good quality drinking water. This will be applied in rural areas (50 inhabitants or <10 m3/d, very small water supplies (VSWS)) of the Mediterranean region, promoting sustainability and resilience of rural areas, agriculture and tourism sectors.
The project will demonstrate the use of this technology at three sites affected by agricultural pollution in Spain (Nules, Caldes de Montbui) and France (Perpignan).
This project is carried out together with 5 partners: FACSA, IRTA, CSIC, PROTECMED and EURECAT.

Summary of the Event
In the first part, experts from the Diputación de Castellón and the Universitat de València addressed the contamination of aquifers. They talked about the chemical composition of groundwater in the province and the challenges related to agriculture.
Subsequently, some LIFE SPOT project partners offered a joint presentation describing the objectives, scope and achievements of the project.
The conference concluded with the presentation of innovative technologies for the treatment of groundwater and drinking water. Projects such as UPWATER (with case studies in Denmark, Greece and Barcelona), LIFE SOuRCE (focused on the treatment of water contaminated with PFAS substances) and the Puremust-SN biological denitrification technology integrated in BIOBOX Nitrates were highlighted.
In our presentation we explained the process followed by this technology from its development in our own innovation center to the commercial phase with BIOBOX. We shared different success stories and real applications, highlighting two particular cases. One of them was a project in the municipality of CALAF which was executed as planned from the beginning. The other case involved a series of obstacles that we successfully overcame throughout the project, demonstrating the effectiveness and versatility of our technology in difficult situations.
At the conclusion of the day, a physical visit to the pilot plant of the LIFE SPOT project took place.
