BIOBOX, a commitment to the digitization and automation of water treatment plants

One of the main challenges in the water sector is digitization in Industry 4.0. BIOBOX bases the design of its plants on automation and uses advanced technologies to create systems with self-management capacity to simplify the treatment of complex water.

The automation of water treatment plants is not something new, however, it has always been focused as a solution for medium and large size facilities. The novelty of the BIOBOX approach is that it proposes to incorporate these technologies for the treatment of smaller flows while maintaining the viability of the proposed solutions as a whole, both in operating and investment costs (OPEX and CAPEX).

In fact, thanks to automation, operating costs can be further reduced, as consumables are reduced to the minimum necessary and maintenance and operation of the plant are optimized.

The water treatment systems offered by BIOBOX adapt advanced technologies in automation and sensor technology to smaller systems that can work remotely and anywhere in the world.

These plants integrate digital technology to ensure the smooth operation of the processes, improve the efficiency of the solution, manage risk and bring high added value to the customer. The design of each plant is based on the continuous storage of digital data from existing plants, with a big-data and smartwater approach. This allows the offered designs to be fully optimized, robust and highly competitive. BIOBOX plants arise from the idea of transforming traditional water treatment plants into intelligent, self-managing systems with a minimum need for intervention by operating staff.

These are 100% automated Plug&Play plants. Automated control is achieved by means of sensor technology and control devices that allow continuous measurement of key parameters in real time.

Having this data makes it possible to optimize the process and obtain an indicative view of how it is performing at all times. For example, thanks to sensor technology it is possible to adjust the use of consumables to what is strictly necessary, with flexibility to absorb changes and fluctuations. In addition, it avoids dependence on parameter control in external laboratories.

All operating data and monitored process parameters are recorded both locally, in memory format, and virtually on a server, allowing real-time and historical visualization from any device with an internet connection. This visualization can be accessed simultaneously by several users from anywhere in the world.

In addition, the plant is equipped with remote control technology 4.0. Thanks to these remote control systems, the technical staff can comfortably supervise and control the plant online. It is also very useful for BIBOX technicians to be able to help the user in the event of any kind of emergency or incident.

Access to the data visualization and control platform is designed to be secure and hack-proof.

The systems are also equipped with a high-definition display located on the front of the electrical cabinet. This panel also offers the alternative of managing the plant manually.

Thanks to automation, there is absolute control of the installation. It is a very convenient solution for the end user as it is complemented with a service of warnings and alarms through alerts via messaging directly to the mobile device, considerably reducing the reaction time of the operating staff in any situation.

Depending on the type of pollutant to be removed, different key indicative parameters are defined and therefore different probes are used. Some of the most commonly used are:

  • On-line nitrogen concentration measurement probes: We incorporate probes to monitor nitrogen concentrations with maximum accuracy in any of its forms: either in the form of nitrate nitrogen N-NO3- or ammonium nitrogen N-NH4.
  • pH control probes
  • ORP probe
  • Oxidation-reduction potential REDOX control probes and/or measurement of dissolved oxygen in water in aerobic processes.
  • Probes for measuring free chlorine in processes requiring disinfection.
