Last August, the project “Design and execution of the works for a DWTP to eliminate nitrates by biological treatment in the Horteta tank in the TM of Torrent” was awarded to create a BIOBOX® plant to eliminate nitrates by biological treatment in the Horteta tank in the municipality of Torrent, Valencia.
After an exhaustive evaluation process and thanks to the soundness of the solution proposed by Ingeniería de Obras Zaragoza, BIOBOX® Nitratos has been awarded the tender.
What does the project consist of?
The company Aigües de l’Horta, formed by Torrent City Council and Hidraqua Gestión Integral de Aguas de Levante, has been managing the complete water cycle in the municipality of Torrent since 1996. Its commitment is to ensure at all times a water supply with guaranteed quality and continuity of service.
The only sources of supply in this area of the municipality are groundwater abstraction, specifically from the Horteta I and Horteta II wells. These supplies are currently restricted due to high concentrations of nitrates, with an annual average of 65-80 mg/L, which is higher than the parametric limit established by the health authorities.
This project is proposed as a technically and economically viable solution that will solve the problem of nitrate contamination of the water supply. In the coming months, a BIOBOX® Nitrates plant will be built, installed and commissioned to treat a flow of 120 m3/hour by means of biological heterotrophic denitrification.
In this case, in order to reduce the space occupied by the installation, the design of the plant will be in skid.
